As a psychological soothing measure, my husband and I have been watching our way through all the seasons of "Call the Midwife" before bed. It IS really soothing, in that, it is set in a small section of the East End of London that is a distinct neighborhood, and the people really care for and about each other. But, it turns out that "the good old days" were just as full of the same social issues and political problems that we are facing today. At the end of EVERY episode my husband remarks, "Wow, all our issues today, were issues then!" We are often in tears over the fact that even when problems can't be 'fixed' or a situation changed, there is this overarching theme of the program (and book by Jennifer Worth): "The world is not as bleak as we imagine. If one provides a listening ear during that moment of crisis, we are stronger than we think. Other people are our ARMOR and BARRICADE!!!" It is a sort of military language for that tender power that we call "we are ONLY human". The narrator at the end reads a small snippet from the book championing what it is to be "only human". She say that ..."to be human is to embrace ALL the power that is: to grow, to nurture, to protect, to listen, and to learn and love." And I would argue that, your "armor and barricade" could show up wearing a chiffon dress and strappy sandals!!! Today, may you protect, and be protected by the fragile/strong armor that is 'being human'.
