"For Whom Will You Set the Table?" It's Sunday, a day when we can gather, and linger over food and drink, stop, rest, engage. I love tables, because tables are this sacred place where we hear people's stories...maybe, just maybe, we get a glimpse into what has shaped another person. As hosts, we freely give: pouring out our 'wine', offering people 'more'...actually asking the words, "Do you need more?" and "Can I get you anything?" Ritualistic words that shape us into kinder, more giving people. (Well actually my servant hearted husband usually asks, that, because I am lost in, and often over-stimulated by the conversation and forget to ask!) Author of "The Quiet Before" Gal Beckerman discusses the role of the actual 'table' as an important device, an ancient symbol that signals 'communion will take place here', and how in virtual/on-line communication, when the physical table is not there, a different sort of communication takes place.... As important as a physical table IS, it can also be merely prop and scenery. The real play, is the conversation that takes place: an exchange that may lift off, challenge, provoke, or plant seeds. And I hope, gentle readers, that you know me well enough to know that I would never confine the concept of a 'meal' to a table top and literal food. I believe that we saw a 'table set' in Poland last week when we say strollers lined up at the train station awaiting fleeing Ukrainian mothers. I believe we say the 'table set' when we saw the people of Berlin offering lodging in their own homes to refugees, I believe the we are seeing the EU 'set the table' as they have relaxed visa restrictions for incoming refugees and arranged vaccinations. So I ask myself this question: "For whom will I 'set the table' this week?"
